APPI Conference in Guimarães, Portugal

Last weekend--30th April, 1st and 2nd May-- most CAA directors and staff went to the APPI 24th Conference in Guimarães, north of Portugal. The Conference theme was "Highlighting key skills in Language Learning."

A lot of famous EFL/ELT names were present: David Crystal, Scott Thornbury and Carol Read, among many others (go to the APPI site for the complete list of speakers--see below on this blog).

As usual, this conference was very well organized and the organizers managed to bring some important names in our field to Guimarães.We greatly enjoyed hearing Professor David Crystal's opening session on Advanced Conversational English: fact or fiction(1st plenary session). Professor David is such a entertaining and thought-provoking lecturer!

We also took part in many inspiring workshops that kept us very active physically as well as mentally during the three-day conference.

It was also very nice to be able to net-work with some of our friends and colleagues attending or presenting at the conference.

In between sessions we also had a chance to look at the books and ELT materials brought to the conference by the various publishing companies-Oxford, Cambridge, MacMillan, Porto Editora and others. Lots of goodies handed out by all the publishers.

Simphonia das Letras, Ricardo's bookshop, did a great job at Appi. So many new books and teaching materials, including hand puppets. Lots of readers for the younger crowd as well. It was hard to resist.

MacmIllan's puppets for the Bug books were also so cute! Thank you, Frank! We were sorry that Jane Harding had an accident and could not present "Snug as a bug in a rug (Bugs World). However, we want to congratulate the MacMillan team for getting Carol Read to make an emergency presentation in Jane's place.

Attending the APPI Conference--an yearly event--is a must for any English teacher who wants to keep up with what is happening in the world of EFL/ELT.

I hope the next APPI conference will not be too far away from us (Chaves and Vila Real!)
